Local environmental group "Greener Leith" are promoting more environmentally friendly shopping with the production of over 2,000 cotton shopping bags.

Expanding on the "bag for life" principle, these bags are available from local businesses in the Leith area. This initiative is part of their "Shop Local, Shop Smart" campaign encouraging people to support local businesses and reduce the volume of plastic bags that they use.

Group leader Alastair Tibbitt said "Many people are unaware that globally, 1 million plastic bags are used every minute? Now I don't think anyone has worked out how many carrier bags we use in Leith every minute - but our Greener Leith cotton shopping bags aim to make it easy for everyone to cut down on our addiction".

Liberal Democrats are backing this local initiative. Lib Dem campaigner in the Leith Walk ward, Louise Lang, said "This is a great initiative, promoting Leith as environmentally aware and an area of responsible, smart shopping. I have purchased my bag and would encourage others to do the same."

The "bags for life" are available in many local businesses in Leith. A list is available on their website.
