National newspaper makes it official - its Labour or Lib Dem in Edinburgh North & Leith
6.07.04pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 12th Apr 2007
In a review of the election in Edinburgh, the Herald newspaper has today confirmed that the race to win Edinburgh North & Leith is between Labour and the Liberal Democrats.
In their review, they said
"The Lib Dems also want Mike Crockart to defeat Labour's former minister...in Edinburgh North & Leith.......The Lib Dems did serious damage to the majority of Labour..., with one of the opposition party's best results in Scotland." Having established themselves as main challenger to Labour in the north of the city, they hope Labour will again be weakened by the Iraq war."
Regarding the SNP, the Herald said
"the SNP has reckoned its prospects in the capital are so poor that it can afford to take the political pain.....Even on a cracking good result, the SNP cannot expect to make much headway in the city (Edinburgh)."
Commenting on the article, Lib Dem candidate Mike Crockart said, "Everyone in Edinburgh North & Leith knows that only the Liberal Democrats can beat Labour here. More and more people are fed up with a Labour party which has taken our area for granted. Now they are switching to the Liberal Democrats and our positive policies for more police, local health care, smaller class sizes and more green renewable energy."
