'Election circus' underlines case for fixed term parliaments - Lang12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 5th Oct 2007
Local Liberal Democrat, Kevin Lang has joined calls for fixed term parliaments following two weeks of 'will he, won't he' speculation about Gordon Brown calling a autumn election. Kevin said, "The Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh North & Leith are ready to fight a winning campaign, whenever Gordon Brown calls an election. Labour has taken this constituency for granted for too long and we are ready to put forward our positive agenda for change. "However, the election speculation that has engulfed the country over the last two weeks has been bad for democracy, bad for the economy and bad for the UK as a whole. "It is ridiculous to have a system whereby the Prime Minister can play fast and loose with our democracy and decide to hold an election whenever it suits him. It is high time the UK moved to join most other democratic countries by having fixed four year term parliaments. MSPs in the Scottish Parliament already have a fixed four year period in office and it has worked well. It is time that MPs in the House of Commons followed suit."
