Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh have welcomed the news that Lothian and Borders Police Force will receive an additional £217,000 a year as a victory for all those who have campaigned for the recognition of Edinburgh's capital city status and extra responsibilities.

Liberal Democrat MSP for Edinburgh West, Margaret Smith said:

"I am delighted that the Justice Secretary has realised that Edinburgh needs more money for its police forces. This is a victory for everyone who has campaigned for the recognition of the extra responsibilities that Edinburgh has as result of its capital city status.

"I wrote to the Justice Secretary outlining the extra burdens that the Edinburgh police force faces and urging him to support the Chief Constable's request for extra funding.

"I am delighted that the Justice Secretary has listened to our requests."

Local Liberal Democrat campaigner Kevin Lang added:

"At the last election here in Edinburgh North & Leith, the Liberal Democrats fought a strong campaign for extra resources for the local police. Whilst this extra money is welcome, it is still disappointing to see the SNP Scottish Government breaking its election promise to recruit an extra 1,000 police officers. In fact, the SNP Justice Secretary has admitted that barely half of the numbers of extra police promised will actually be recruited. We need more local police to help tackle crime in Edinburgh North & Leith."
