Newly elected Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg visited Edinburgh today to hold the first of his public 'town hall' style meetings. He was greeted by a packed audience at the Friends Meeting House and took questions from both Liberal Democrat supporters and non-supporters.

Questions covered a range of topics including ID cards, crime, the NHS, Scottish independence, transport and carers. Nick plans to hold similar meetings around the country, taking politics back to the people.

During his visit, Nick also stopped to support the Liberal Democrat campaign in Edinburgh North & Leith, now one of the party's top target seats at the next General Election.

Local Lib Dem candidate, Kevin Lang said, "As someone who supported Nick during the recent leadership contest, it was great to see him come to Edinburgh for his very first town hall public meeting and to get his support for our local campaign.

"In Edinburgh North & Leith, people are fed up with a Labour Party that has taken local people for granted for too long. People are looking for a fresh and positive alternative and boosted by Nick's new energetic leadership, the Liberal Democrats are now seriously challenging Labour in this part of the city."
