Liberal Democrats in the Edinburgh North & Leith constituency are celebrating after securing their highest ever share of the vote in a Euro election. Today, it was announced that Liberal Democrat and former North Edinburgh resident George Lyon was elected our newest Member of the European Parliament.
Attention now shifts to the next UK General Election, which must take place within the next year. At the last election, the Liberal Democrats came a close second to Labour with the Conservatives third and the SNP fourth.
The result of the Euro election and the change in support from last time, would see the Liberal Democrats win Edinburgh North & Leith at the next General Election and local resident Kevin Lang elected our new local Member of Parliament.
Kevin said, "These Euro elections were the last set of scheduled elections before the next UK General Election, which must take place in the next 12 months.
"The Liberal Democrats are focused on one thing and that is victory in Edinburgh North & Leith against Labour in that election.
"It is clear that in that contest, it will be a simple choice between Labour and the Liberal Democrats. The SNP candidate has already admitted that Edinburgh North & Leith is not an obvious target. Even Conservative councillors are admitting they cannot win and that the Liberal Democrats are the challengers. Only a vote for the Lib Dems is a vote to beat Labour.
"We will be working every day between now and the next election, standing up for local people and fighting for change here in Edinburgh North & Leith."
